ABOUT Miami, FLORIDA

Located between the Florida Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay to the east on the southeast tip of Florida, Miami is one of the great cities of the world. Miami proper has a population of 430,000+, but the Miami Metropolitan Area is home to 5.5 million people, making it seventh largest in the U.S. Miami is home to the largest concentration of international banks in the country, and the headquarters for Latin American operations of 1400 multinational corporations. Forbes named Miami “America’s Cleanest City” in 2008 for its clean drinking water and streets, air quality, and expansive greenspaces.

Miami was conceived, unusually among major cities, by a woman, Julia Tuttle, a wealthy citrus grower from Cleveland. During Florida’s Great Freeze of 1894-5, Miami crops were the only ones which survived; with this as the tipping point, Tuttle convinced railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway to Miami, earning Tuttle the nickname “the mother of Miami.” Flagler also built streets, utility systems, and a resort hotel, and Miami was incorporated in 1896.

With a maximum elevation of 24 feet above sea level, Miami is justifiably famous for its diverse cultures, thriving world-music scene, and unique neighborhoods and historic districts. Prominent among these are the Art Deco district of South Beach and the Afro-American Overtown district, the latter hosting Harlem Renaissance headliners like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway during the 1930s.
