A paradise on earth located on Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Bonita Springs, Florida, lies on the southwest Florida coast 30 miles south of Fort Myers. The shoreline known as Bonita Beach runs along the Gulf side of the barrier island from the Imperial River to Big Hickory Island. Ponce De Leon sailed up what is now Bonita Beach and made contact with the Calusa Indians in 1513. Homesteaders started settling the area, then called “Survey” in 1901. Later, to add to the sales appeal, Survey was renamed Bonita Springs, and Surveyor’s Creek was renamed “Imperial River.”
