ABOUT West Palm Beach, FLORIDA

The City of West Palm Beach, Florida, is the county seat of Palm Beach County and lies on the Atlantic Coast of South Florida in the center of the eastern Palm Beach County Urbanized Area (est. population 1.25 million) running from Jupiter to Boca Raton. It includes almost 9 miles of shoreline running along the west side of Lake Worth—all that separates Lake Worth from the Atlantic Ocean is the narrow 16-mile-long barrier island that comprises Palm Beach.

Most of the West Palm Beach development is located along this stretch of Highway 1 and Interstate 95, surrounding Lake Mangonia and Clear Lake. The city limits also extend around a vast area of wild wetlands west of the Florida Turnpike known as the Grassy Waters Preserve. The city’s population along with adjacent unincorporated neighborhoods is estimated at 135,000.

A major redevelopment effort begun in the 1990s has dramatically reversed the problems of urban blight and crime that hit West Palm Beach particularly hard in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Many historic neighborhoods have been revitalized and restored, the behemoth Palm Beach Mall has been replaced by the outdoor Palm Beach Outlets, and a European-style shopping-dining-residential village called CityPlace has risen where a dilapidated neighborhood once stood. West Palm Beach also boasts the 1992 Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and a new convention center, as well as the restored historic shopping district of Clematis Street and the nationally esteemed Antique Row shopping district.
