Fort Myers, Florida, is the urban center and gateway to Southwest Florida and a popular vacation destination since 1898, unique for its white sand beaches, coastal islands, and deep sea fishing. Located on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River, the population of Fort Myers is about 70,000, while the Cape Coral-Fort Myers metropolitan area is home to about 620,000, both agreeably non-intimidating numbers. The original settlers moved to Fort Myers from Key West in 1866 and started a trading post near the abandoned Seminole Indian Wars fort. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford both had winter mansions here which are still major attractions today.
