ABOUT Homestead, FLORIDA

Ensconced between Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, Homestead, Florida is a small inland city at the southern end of the Florida peninsula with its population a modest 60,000 and city limits measuring a mere four miles by six miles. A Miami exurb, Homestead lies 35 miles southwest of Miami at the southern end of the Florida Turnpike where it comes back into Highway 1. Latitude-wise, it is due west of the northern end of the Florida Keys and, with neighboring Florida City, is the southernmost city in the United States that isn’t located on an island. Incorporated in 1913, Homestead is the second-oldest city in Miami-Dade County after Miami itself.

A quite unique attraction is the Coral Castle, which features many megalithic sculptures carved from limestone, each weighing several tons. The legends which attached to these mysterious statues—fueled by the fact that the owner, Latvian eccentric Edward Leedskalnin, never let anyone watch him work—run along the lines of those surrounding Easter Island and Stonehenge: that Leedskalnin had discovered some sort of massive reverse gravity, etc.
