ABOUT Cutler Bay, FLORIDA

Located along the southeast Florida coast 20 miles southwest of Miami, Cutler Bay, Florida, lies atop Cutler Ridge, an ancient coral formation first settled by non-natives around 1825. In the early 1900s, the town of Cutler served as a trading post for settlers of the Homestead, Florida, area farther southwest. Cutler Bay began to be developed in the 1950s but remained unincorporated until Hurricane Andrew struck in 1992. The movement towards incorporation was spurred by efforts to rebuild after the hurricane; incorporation of Cutler Bay was ultimately accomplished in 2005. It now has a population of 43,000.

What coastline Cutler Bay itself has is entirely given over to the vast Lakes By The Bay nature preserve. The Charles Deering Estate, which lies just northeast of the Cutler Bay city limits in Palmetto Bay, is another vast and fascinating nature preserve. It includes the Cutler Fossil Site where mammoth, sabertooth tiger, and California condor fossils have been found, as well as archaeological evidence of Native American habitation going back 10,000 years.

Cutler Bay is working hard to become a full-service city; it now offers seven urban parks, a community center, and aquatic and athletic facilities, as well as eight elementary schools.
