ABOUT Pembroke Pines, FLORIDA

Snuggled in the center of the Miami metro area, the inland community of Pembroke Pines, Florida, lies between Hollywood to the east and the Everglades to the west, 22 miles north of Miami proper. Once entirely agricultural land, the expansion of development in the Miami area led to the incorporation of the Village of Pembroke Pines in 1959. Just one year later, Pines was incorporated as a city with less than one square mile in area.

Pembroke Pines saw dramatic population growth in the 1990s as thousands of southern Dade County residents migrated to the abundant new housing in Broward County in the wake of Hurricane Andrew. The population has grown to 164,626 as of 2014, while still enjoying one of the very lowest population densities among Florida cities with 100,000 or more residents.
